Seek First The Kingdom Of GOD: Two Masters – Hating One While Loving The Other

Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.

Brother Jim’s Understanding:

1) Nobody, not one single man or one single woman, has ability to bind himself or be bound as a servant or slave to two supreme masters or authorities: for either you will greatly dislike, detest, and abhor the one and you will love and enjoy serving the other; or else you will adhere to the one and disregard with contempt the other. You absolutely cannot (are not able to) serve and be led by GOD, and serve and be led by a covetous and insatiable greedy lust for wealth and its power at the same time.

2) It is not possible for any man or any woman, not even one man or woman, to serve or be a servant to two masters: for either you will greatly desire to ignore the one while greatly desiring to serve the other; or you will strive to closely stick to the one while striving to escape the other. It is absolutely impossible to be a committed servant and worshiper of GOD and to also serve with commitment, worship, and idolize wealth and its power.

When we are foolish enough to attempt to split our loyalty between serving Almighty GOD and serving other things we will ultimately find ourselves either hating, disliking, detesting, and abhoring GOD while loving and enjoying serving and pursuing the things of this world, or we will adhere to GOD and have contempt for the people, things, and power this world seems to offer.

Remember Lot’s wife:

Luk 17:32-33 Remember Lot’s wife. 33 Whosoever shall seek to save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life shall preserve it.

Gen 19:26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

(Please see: Two Masters – You Can Only Serve One, paragraphs 14-16, for more on Lot’s wife.)

We must understand that GOD has designed creation to work for our good, and that our LORD Jesus Christ is revealing how creation is designed to do so. When we choose to follow our own way, we are choosing to not follow the teaching of our LORD Jesus Christ; and are in effect, telling GOD we know better than He does how things should work. The arrogance and impudence we display when we do so is astounding. And without realizing it, we do this far too often; much more often than we realize.

The Israelites repeatedly went back and forth between serving Almighty GOD and serving other gods. Holy Scripture shows us the terrible things Israel suffered as a result. Not only does the Old Testament record the results of wavering between two masters, but Revelation does also.

Rev 3:14-16 And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God; 15 I know thy works, that thou art neither cold nor hot: I would thou wert cold or hot. 16 So then because thou art lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spue thee out of my mouth.

Is this the result we want from our lives? To make GOD so sick of our attitudes, behaviors, and lack of commitment that He vomits us out of His mouth? Is it really our desire to make GOD puke at the sight of us? To forcefully eject us from Himself?

Let’s look at my first statement again, please.

Do we truly desire to go through life hating, disliking, detesting, and abhoring GOD? Are the people and things of this world so important to us that we would rather have them than GOD? Or do we think that we must have contempt for the people and things of this world in order to love and to serve GOD?

GOD does not want us to have contempt for anyone, but instead to love them. How can we do this and not be torn between GOD and the people and things of this world? By purposely making the permanent quality decision to serve GOD as our Supreme Master.

Exo 20:2-7 I am the LORD thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: 5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me; 6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments. 7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Deu 6:5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Deu 10:12 And now, Israel, what doth the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all his ways, and to love him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul,

Deu 11:1 Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep his charge, and his statutes, and his judgments, and his commandments, alway.

Jos 22:5 But take diligent heed to do the commandment and the law, which Moses the servant of the LORD charged you, to love the LORD your God, and to walk in all his ways, and to keep his commandments, and to cleave unto him, and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul.

Jos 23:11 Take good heed therefore unto yourselves, that ye love the LORD your God.

Mat 22:37-40 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

Luk 10:27-28 And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself. 28 And he said unto him, Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou shalt live.

The WORD of our LORD Jesus Christ is truly simple. The decision is ours. Which master will we choose? Whom will you serve? GOD? Mammon? Self?

Let us choose wisely and put GOD first, in all things. Please, I implore you, make GOD your Supreme Master. Taste and see the goodness of the LORD GOD, that you may have life; in this world and eternity.

Note: All Holy Scripture is given in the King James Version, 1769. Bold emphasis is added.
