Seek First the Kingdom of GOD: Two Masters – Being A Slave

Mat 6:24 No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. (Bold emphasis added.)

Brother Jim’s Understanding:

1) Nobody, not one single man or one single woman, has ability to bind himself or be bound as a servant or slave to two supreme masters or authorities: for either you will greatly dislike detest,  and abhor the one and you will love and enjoy serving the other; or else you will adhere to the one and disregard with contempt the other. You absolutely cannot (are not able to) serve and be led by GOD, and serve and be led by a covetous and insatiable greedy lust for wealth and its power at the same time.

2) It is not possible for any man or any woman, not even one man or woman, to serve or be a slave to two masters: for either you will greatly desire to ignore the one while greatly desiring to serve the other; or you will strive to closely stick to the one while striving to escape the other. It is absolutely impossible to be a committed servant and worshiper of GOD and to also serve with commitment, worship, and idolize wealth and its power.

Beloved reader, I have something to say that may seem a bit offensive to many. You are a slave. I am a slave. We all are slaves. We are all born into this world slaves to the god of this world, for the dominion over this earth and all living things that move on it were originally given to the first created of us (Adam), and then was given by Adam to Satan making Satan the god (ruler) of this world. We now have a choice: we may remain born slaves to the god of this world, or we may choose to be born again into the Kingdom of GOD, and become a slave to GOD.

We will be a slave serving either Almighty GOD in His Kingdom, or we will be a slave serving Satan by remaining in his kingdom. Our LORD Jesus Christ came to redeem us, and then gave us the right and the responsibility to make our own choice.

Even if this seems offensive to you, please read on. Remembering, Almighty GOD treats and views those of His Kingdom quite differently than Satan treats and views those of his kingdom.

Our LORD Jesus Christ is making a definite point here. It is absolutely impossible for any man or any woman to be a committed slave to two different supreme ruling masters at the same time.

If you balk at the words “committed slave” saying that we are instead children of Almighty GOD, I ask you two things:

  1. How does Holy Scripture say children are to be treated until they mature?
  2. What example did our LORD Jesus Christ and the early Apostles of our LORD Jesus Christ set for us?

When we are born again, we are made heirs in our LORD Jesus Christ, joint-heirs with Him to the Kingdom of Almighty GOD. We are born children of our earthly father, but we are born again children of our heavenly Father. How are children treated until they mature into full sonship with the ability to walk in full representation of their Father being led by Holy Spirit?

Rom 8:16-17 The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.

Gal 4:1-2 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all; 2 But is under tutors and governors until the time appointed of the father.

Joh 1:12 But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:

Rom 8:13-14 For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

In Matthew 6:24, the Greek word used for ‘serve’ means ‘to be a slave’. From its root word it carries the connotation ‘to be bound as a servant or slave’. In Galatians 4:1 the Greek word for ‘servant’ means ‘slave’.

In our modern society the idea of being a slave seems rather abhorrent. However, when we look at our lives we find that we have bound ourselves as slavish servants in many ways. We bind ourselves to our spouses to serve only them (with no other being permitted as a spouse) in the marital relationship. We have children and bind ourselves as slavish servants to them to raise them, care for them, protect them, provide for them, and love them. For our spouses and children, we do so out of love. We bind ourselves to our employers, usually doing this out of necessity. Yes, we get paid for doing so, but do you think we receive any less benefit from Almighty GOD when we choose to bind ourselves to Him as His slave?

Consider, please, the Words of our LORD Jesus Christ:

Joh 8:34 Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

The Greek word translated ‘servant’ in John 8:34 means ‘a slave’.

Let us look at our Supreme Example, our LORD Jesus Christ. The Greek work translated as ‘servant’ in the following Scripture is the same as in John 8:34 meaning ‘a slave’. I have added the bold emphasis.

Mat 12:18 Behold my servant, whom I have chosen; my beloved, in whom my soul is well pleased: I will put my spirit upon him, and he shall shew judgment to the Gentiles.

Php 2:7-8 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

In Matthew 12:18, Matthew was writing by inspiration of Holy Spirit pointing out to us the fulfillment of Isaiah 42:1. In Isaiah, the Hebrew word translated ‘servant’ means ‘a servant’ and comes from a root word meaning ‘to work, to serve, to till, to enslave’.

In Philippians 2:7-8, we see that our LORD Jesus Christ made himself of no reputation when He, the WORD of GOD, was made flesh thereby taking on the form of a slave. Why a slave? Because humanity had been enslaved to sin by the willful act of Adam, and by this to Satan whom Adam gave his own right to be the god of this world subject to Almighty GOD. Being born into the world, the kingdom now ruled by Satan, we are born his slaves.

Yet, the WORD of GOD chose out of His great Love for us to take on our form, that of a slave in this world and of the god of this world, in order to redeem us so that we may have the choice to believe in Him and be born again into His Holy Kingdom.

Our LORD Jesus so enslaved Himself out of His great Love for us that He even became obedient to the requirement of the law of sin and death on our behalf. He lived a sinless life as The Lamb of GOD, and became The Sacrifice for our sin. So, do we want to be a slave of the law of sin and death or do we want to be a slave of the Law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus? Do we want to remain born a slave unto Satan and his kingdom, or do we want to be born again a slave unto the Kingdom of GOD WHO IS LOVE?

What about the example of others in Holy Scripture? In the following verses of Holy Scripture, the word ‘servant’ means ‘slave’. (Bold emphasis added.)

Act 4:25 Who by the mouth of thy servant David hast said, Why did the heathen rage, and the people imagine vain things?

Rom 1:1 Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,

1Co 7:22 For he that is called in the Lord, being a servant, is the Lord’s freeman: likewise also he that is called, being free, is Christ’s servant.

Gal 1:10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ.

Gal 4:1 Now I say, That the heir, as long as he is a child, differeth nothing from a servant, though he be lord of all;

Col 4:12 Epaphras, who is one of you, a servant of Christ, saluteth you, always labouring fervently for you in prayers, that ye may stand perfect and complete in all the will of God.

2Ti 2:24 And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient,

Tit 1:1 Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness;

Jas 1:1 James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting.

2Pe 1:1 Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ:

Jud 1:1 Jude, the servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, to them that are sanctified by God the Father, and preserved in Jesus Christ, and called:

Rev 15:3 And they sing the song of Moses the servant of God, and the song of the Lamb, saying, Great and marvellous are thy works, Lord God Almighty; just and true are thy ways, thou King of saints.

Rev 1:1 The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which God gave unto him, to shew unto his servants things which must shortly come to pass; and he sent and signified it by his angel unto his servant John:

Now, reread the above Scripture verses inserting ‘slave’ (the meaning of the Greek word translated servant(s) in these verses) in place of ‘servant’.

Let me ask a question, please. Do you ever wonder why we do not see the signs, wonders, miracles, and results of the disciples of the early church in our daily lives?

Could it be because we also do not see the same level of commitment to the Kingdom of GOD and His Righteousness in our lives that we see in theirs? They identified themselves as slaves of GOD and of our LORD Jesus Christ. The Revelation of Jesus Christ, which GOD gave unto his slave John, was for the intent of John to show unto the slaves of GOD things which must shortly come to pass. Do we want the Revelation of Jesus Christ? Do we want our LORD Jesus Christ to be revealed to others through our own lives? Will we get over ourselves (our ‘selfs’) and be slaves unto Almighty GOD for the purpose of spreading His Love, His Kingdom, and His Righteousness?

Let us finally remember these Words from our LORD Jesus Christ:

Mat 10:37-39 He that loveth father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and he that loveth son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. 39 He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.

Mat 16:24-25 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. 25 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

Luk 9:23-26 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. 24 For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. 25 For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away? 26 For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words, of him shall the Son of man be ashamed, when he shall come in his own glory, and in his Father’s, and of the holy angels.

May we join together on this journey, and encourage each other, to lay down our lives, take up our crosses daily in total obedience as slaves to GOD WHO IS LOVE, following the example of our LORD Jesus Christ who was obedient unto death on the cross, relying upon the leading and comfort of Holy Spirit. May others know Who We Are by our embrace of LOVE and the free flow of LOVE in our lives being lights leading into the Kingdom of Almighty GOD.

Num 6:24-26 The LORD bless thee, and keep thee:

25 The LORD make his face shine upon thee, and be gracious unto thee:

26 The LORD lift up his countenance upon thee, and give thee peace.

Note: All Scripture is given in the King James Version, 1769, and the bold emphasis is added.

‘Thee’ from the KJV is the singular second person; ‘you’ singular.

Brother Jim’s Note: For me, studying Matthew 6:24-34 is like getting several buckets of ice cold water splashed in my face, repeatedly waking me up to the truth that is so simply and plainly recorded for us that I have been asleep to for far too long. I pray this study will be a blessing and encouragement to you.
